Why do I need a data plan with my Droid Eris?
I bought a Droid Eris to replace my broken LG Dare. I don’t want constant access to the internet through verizon’s network, just through wireless at my home and local hot spots. Why would I have to pay an extra $30 per month for that?
Because Verizon CAN. I know many people are angry about this. Maybe when everyone leaves Verizon they will rethink their ridiculous policy. Of course you should be able to use you phone like you did with your original contract! If Verizon is worried about accidental internet connection through their network (BS) they should block access. I’m a current customer, soon to be a former customer for this very reason.

Hey Joe, maybe you should get your facts straight before you chime in here. What are you a corporate shill? Verizon will charge you an additional $29.99 for a data plan whether you buy the phone through them or not. Now does that still make sense to you? OK, so we can eliminate your pompous suggestion that this is a way to recover subsidized money on the phone. Now maybe you will open you eyes and understand why there are so many people angry about this.
Also, I believe T-Mobile does not require a data plan on a phone you purchase yourself. That would be my choice as soon as my contract is up. If all phone carriers were to hold the “data plan” as a requirement, that would amount to collusion, which, of course, would be illegal.
Some carrier apologists claim people ran up huge data related bills and this is the reason they now force everyone with a “Smart Phone” to pay for a data plan. How nice of them to protect us huh Joe? This claim is garbage. The customer should be able to block internet access through the carrier network, and only use wi-fi for connecting to the internet.
Bottom line is: Most customers want a wi-fi capable phone WITHOUT a data plan. Verizon and other carriers are not allowing this currently. They will bleed customers until they do. If all carriers start to require a data plan, then I smell a class action lawsuit coming. Collusion is still illegal in America! People need to get angry Joe. You can continue to blindly pay your monthly $29.99 ignorance fee.
